We believe that every activity — no matter how simple — can be a stepping stone toward building essential skills for the future.
Last Wednesday, we ran an arts-and-crafts session where the spotlight was on creating origami sunglasses. This wasn't just about folding paper; it was about inspiring creativity, encouraging problem-solving and having a ton of fun along the way.
What we did
We guided students step by step to fold their own unique pair of origami sunglasses using just a piece of craft paper. The simplicity of the activity let students dive in with enthusiasm, while its structure subtly introduced them to skills that are foundational to their growth.
Why this activity?
Origami is more than art — it's a tool to help kids practise:
- Creativity: each child added their own flair, making their sunglasses a reflection of their personality.
- Critical thinking: students learned to follow sequences, analyse folds and understand spatial relationships.
- Fine motor skills: folding paper with precision required dexterity and focus, improving hand–eye coordination.
- Patience and resilience: it wasn't about getting it perfect on the first try, but enjoying the process of learning and improving.
The parent's role
As a parent, you play a vital role in your child's learning journey. Encourage your child to share their creations proudly. It's not about achieving perfection — it's about expressing creativity, building confidence and enjoying the process.
We'd love to see their sunglasses. Whether it's a masterpiece or an experiment, send us a photo or video of their creation. Seeing these efforts helps us understand how we're evolving as a community and inspires others to take part.
Recreate the fun
Rajini's style + sunglasses = ultimate fun. The videos below give a step-by-step guide to folding origami sunglasses, along with a look at how we make learning fun and skilful.
